I have a friend who’s going through a tough time right now, and so I wasn’t really surprised when ke Akua (God) told me to make a prayer shawl for her. Because I see her a lot, I was able to sneakily surrepticiously ask her what she considered to be the color of comfort. Right after she told me, I set out on a quest to find just the right yarn.
Once again, I found it at one of my very favorite online knitting shops, Jimmy Beans Wool. And it was on sale! Jaeger Baby Merino DK Yarn, in the “Yo Yo” colorway. Perfect!

The pattern I chose was the Simple But Effective Shawl. I’m using size 10.5 circulars, and they’re giving me exactly the effect that I wanted.

You can’t really see the shape of it at this point; however, I can tell that this shawl will definitely need blocking when I’m pau with it.

I pray for my friend while I’m knitting.

And yes, there is a gold thread in the shawl. After I’d been working on it for awhile, ke Akua told me to add the gold thread randomly throughout the shawl. I fretted a little bit that there was no gold thread at the beginning of the shawl, and even thought about figuring out a way to add it back at the beginning rows. But He told me that it was exactly the way it should be already; that it wasn’t ready for the gold yet back at the beginning.

When I finally give it to my friend, I hope that she’ll be able to feel all the aloha and prayers that have gone into it. If she does, then I will be satisfied.
