Speaking of this rainbow…

…I couldn’t help but wonder, as we were driving mauka (east) that day, how many people were aware of it and took notice of it. We were driving along Highway 212 and the rainbow was majestic in front of us. It was so incredible that I thought, in a different world, traffic would’ve stopped, people would’ve gotten out of their cars, gotten together in groups, and shared in the delight of getting to witness such an incredible sight.

Of course, that didn’t happen, and it probably wouldn’t have even been reasonable to do so, but those are the kinds of things I think about. I also wonder how many times we rush through our days, not noticing the wonder of everything around us. That’s one of the reasons I started the 365 Days photos, because I learned even more about all the miracles, large and small, around me, that happen every single day. I’ve always had an eye for detail, and getting to document the details was and is a good thing for me to do. Doing the photos helped me to stay in the present, and not let my mind wander off too much (which it’s inclined to do anyway).

In the end, I was incredibly grateful that the rainbow stayed long enough for me to get off the highway and onto a quiet country road, so that I could see its astonishing beauty and share it with you.

  1. I, too, notice details. It’s so frustrating to see an arresting vista and have no good place to pull over and try to capture it!

Well said, Moki-chan. Mindfulness is such a good practice.

During our first trip to Ireland, on the last day of our tour, a group of us were sitting outside, admiring a bright rainbow. Our tour leader came out to talk to us, and I urged him to spend a moment looking at the rainbow. “I see them all winter long, they’re nothing special,” said he. (Of course, he’s a local.) But I was taken aback at his attitude. He was probably stressed at having to corral all of us, but still.

And thank you for sharing all the little and big bits of beauty.

Yeah, but still. I hope your tour leader found time to really appreciate the rainbows at some point. As you know, Mānoa Valley, where I grew up, is also called the “valley of the rainbows” because we have so many of them. I can still remember coming from downtown or Waikīkī and seeing them waiting for me. It’s one of my best memories.

I so appreciate your thoughtful comments!
