Shearing Day 2015, Chapter Two

Well, between the two of them, Danny and Johnny encouraged Rayado over to the fence outside the barn. Nolemana had set things up so that the shearing could be inside, but it was hot in there, and Johnny could shear near a tree.  Ricky and Miss B looked on with amusement.

Shearing Day 2015

We’ve had some awesome shearers over the years like John and Eddie. They’ve both done terrific jobs for us; but the past couple of years our schedules haven’t been able to work out. So last fall, we got a new shearer named Johnny Vargas, and wow. He’s incredible. He sheared Paul and Titus in October, but suggested that we wait to shear Rayado till spring, because sheared llamas don’t do nearly as well as sheep during the cold winter months. Not that we had any last winter, but we had no way of knowing that then.

Knitting Speaks All Languages

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a large room, waiting for my name to be called. I had my knitting with me, of course, and I was perfectly content to pass the time creating something pretty for a friend who’s going through a rough time right now.

Ho Da Hot!

Thankfully, the weather has cooled down. What a relief after so many days of unrelenting heat.  When I first moved to da mainland, this one wahine said, “Oh, but you don’t feel the heat here like you do in Hawaiʻi!” Not.

Oh sure, Kona weather with no trades is miserable. But most days have the cooling trade winds to keep everything comfortable.

Pau Da Tour de Fleece…whew!

What a whirlwind of spinning!  And more spinning! But ho da fun!  This was my best tour ever, I think. I was Captain of one team, and Co-Captain of another one, which involved cheering on my teammates, responding to posts showing some pretty impressive spinning, and encouraging people who needed encouragement.

And in between, I got to spin!  Housework?  What’s that? Laundry?  Well, I did have to have clean clothes. I also had to put in a lot of working hours.  And posting my photos did take a lot of time; gettum off the phone, crop if needed, re-save them, upload to Ravelry. That was pretty time-consuming, too.  And somehow in there I managed to cook dinners and make zucchini bread. Continue reading

Aloha ʻoe e Paul

Today is a sad day for me after all the excitement of Tour de Fleece. One of our two Jacob sheep hasn’t been doing well; for the past two days he’s gotten himself all tangled up in blackberry thickets and wouldn’t come out.  Our angel helpers, Danny and Joan, along with Nolemana, had to take clippers and clip away the thorny branches from around him. Now I wonder if Paul knew his time had come and was trying to find a hiding place.

Stage 17 – Tour de Da Kine

I got to spin for about four hours today at The Gathering. I took my time, also participating to the discussion, listening to my friends share, and having a really wonderful time.  I wasn’t spinning fast, just a relaxed time, so my bobbin doesn’t look very full.  And I was trying to spin pretty fine, too.

Our neighbors just cut their hay; I wish I coulda been there to watch.

Rest Day – Tour de Fleece…and a ride up the mountain.

We had an appraisal to do up in Government Camp; good timing for a rest day. This pretty skein is all washed and dried now. Ho da happy!

Well, here are some TdF collages to document that I really have been spinning during these past buncha days.
