From the All About Birds Hellgate Ospreys Nest Cam:
Thousands voted, and the names of the 2024 Hellgate Osprey chicks have been decided. Meet “Sum-eh” (elder chick) and “Antali” (younger chick)! This pair of names topped the polls by a large margin, receiving 2,081 out of 2,313 total votes. See the graph below for a voting breakdown.
The valleys, rivers, and mountains around Missoula in western Montana were the traditional homeland of the Salish people. The names were chosen for these two special 2024 chicks to honor the Salish people’s deep connection to the land and waters where Iris has raised her offspring for three decades.
“Sum-eh” was the name of a remarkable Salish woman and an extremely important person in her tribe. She served as the tribe’s midwife, as well as a disciplinarian of sorts, and lived to be 112 years old. “Antali” is a Salish name that can be roughly translated as Andrew or Andrea.Thousands voted, and the names of the 2024 Hellgate Osprey chicks have been decided. Now on to plenny hummingbird photos.

August 4th

I have really loved watching these babies growing up, from just hatched to getting ready to take off on their own. And I’m so incredibly happy that Iris got to be a mom again after so long.

There’s something incredibly peaceful and attractive about your pīpī photo from 8/2–I love that light. Funny that we editorialize about what the birds are doing, isn’t it? “Lolo, get one noddah feedah!” I used to urge Iris to feed the younger chick (like she doesn’t know what she’s doing!) when Finnegan would bring fish to the nest. And WOW, all yo’ good hummer photos!
I love that you noticed the light in the pīpī photo! I’m always aware of it, and there’s this perfect time when the light for photos is just… perfect!
I used to tell Iris to feed the younger chick too! We are so sisterly!
