May 22nd

I walked out the back door today and saw this and thought, “Oh no! He’s dead!” But no, it was a fledgling Stellarʻs Jay, sound asleep! I walked up to him and he didnʻt move for quite awhile, but when he woke up he hopped a bit further away.

The pattern on his feathers was so incredibly beautiful!

Your bird shots are off the hook! Gorgeous! I hope that Osprey is just preening…looks flattened???? Great shots as usual oxoxo

    • Mokihana's avatar Mokihana says:

Thank you! The Osprey is sitting on two eggs… this is the first time in a couple of years that she’s had a mate and it’s pretty exciting.

  2. I sure hope the fledgling wasn’t worn out and starving, having launched a little too soon or not followed and fed by its parents. I had that happen here a few years ago.

    • Mokihana's avatar Mokihana says:

He looked pretty okay to me; I used to do wildlife rehab so watched him carefully. I could hear his parents nearby, too. It’s sad when they launch too soon, isn’t it?

  3. AFK's avatar AFK says:

I totally agree with Lady Tie Di–your bird shots are fantastic. I envy your access to all of those gorgeous manu, but you feed them, so you deserve to see them all. I have never been that close to a Stellar’s Jay without them scolding me. I especially love your quail–they’re so cute!

How wonderful to hear Uncle Sonny singing “Pua Tuberose” in your Flicker/Grosbeak video. So calming.

Did you see footage of Iris the Osprey getting attacked by a Great Horned Owl? (If you scroll down lilo bit from the live video, they have archived action shots you can see on Youtube.) Thank goodness she’s okay.

And, as always, mahaloz fo da pīpī pitchas!

I thought you’d like Uncle Sonny singing in the background! I love that song. And I’m glad the quail are sticking around; Iʻve been putting food out for them at the top of our driveway and down a ways, hoping to keep them here.

I didn’t know about Iris getting attacked by the owl; I checked out the video. Oh my goodness! I’m so glad she’s okay too. Mahalo for letting me know about it.
