This is both funny and deplorable. A friend knew someone who named her kids Mary and Juana. Yes, because of that. I suppose it could be worse–the kids could be Weedy and Grassy.
For me, it’s my last name that people have trouble with. When we went to Ireland last year, because there was another woman on the tour who shared my first name, I suggested people use a shortened version of my last name to distinguish us. Another woman said “Well, that doesn’t roll off the Anglo-Saxon tongue.” But IT’S MY NAME! She was an otherwise nice person, just clueless.
I think your name is beautiful.
Mahalo, my friend. Yeah, funny and sad and deplorable…and the same goes for what happened to you in Ireland. A shortened version of your last name is easy, and that woman’s comment is inexcusable. Yeah, talk about clueless. Why should names roll easily off an Anglo-Saxon tongue, anyway? Sigh..
I knew a family whose last name was Cain. They named their daughter “Candy”. And another family…their last name was Hopper. They named their son “Claude”. Sheesh.
G grew up with a family whose last name was “Cattoi,” who named their kids “Kitty” and “Tom.” Sheesh x 2.
Sheesh… that’s terrible!!! Why do parents do that????
